Still is. Ever heard of territorial waters? If you want it politically, that's the piece of sea belonging to a country owning the coast; if you want physically, it's the shallower part under which the slopes of the nearby landmass are.

Connected underwater by shallow waters with the nearby continents. Oceania and Micronesia would be better examples.
