My post was tongue-in-cheek for tablets etc.

Trouble is, most consumer electronics batteries these days are LiIon or NiMH. Besides, you'd want to take the battery out of the device to zap it, otherwise you're exposing the device internals to the overvoltage/overcurrent. And if you can take the battery out, you can just replace it.

That said, my understanding is the technique shown in the link does work for NiCad but you need to be careful.
