>>>Desktop is not the same as a mobile app.
>Why not? E.g. Google's new spectacles have bigger screens and better resolution than 99.9% of desktops out there, so why should we buy into a historic difference?

You're looking at the outside presentation only. A resourceful developer could make an LCD watch process some custom app, sending output in such a way as be received by an accumulator, to then populate a 1080p screen with computed content ... but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Desktop apps are not just about outward presentation ... it's about the heft of the machine, the ability to expand it beyond native specs, to choose this memory over that, this amount of storage over that, the ability to run the gambit of specialized input devices, custom screens, etc. I don't use machines any more that have less than two monitors, for example. Too easy to use, too much information easy to have up, etc.

I'm waiting for the days when my mobile phone can plug into a large screen cradle for tablet-like functionality, and then also to some dock for desktop-like functionality (full keyboard, mouse, printer, just like my machine today).

Mobile machines are great. They're not yet a replacement for desktop, and won't be any time soon (in my opinion).
