before vfp, you could build a standalone exe. this exe contained your app AND the library file fox needed. you could also build a compact exe, which was basically your app w/ startup code to 'run' your app. this needed another file (fox250b.esl, for example). for updates to your program, all you need is the exe file for programming changes.
