>Because Microsoft's goals for .NET are Windows Azure-esque -- meaning remote data, remote software, minimal local compute requirements (low-end local machines), which means all permanent storage, all future significant compute abilities will exist ... elsewhere, making us slaves to somebody else's system (we'll need the Internet, to pay fee for service, and will be at the whim of control mechanisms in the hands of others who have the ability to literally "switch us off" remotely for any reason (including political or ideological ones)).

I do not understand your argument. The .NET framework is specifically for developing applications for the Windows OS. Whether those applications are deployed on your own machines or hosted on cloud-based servers is an entirely different issue - and one which you can make your own decision about.
