>>>>>>>>>>>NY is trying to pass new gun laws.

>>>>>>>>>>>The first person to comment said "All they are going to do is pass some feel good legislation and make millions of previous law abiding citizens into criminals." I totally agree.

>>>>>>>>>If the majority voted to take away freedom of speech you respect their decision?
>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>I don't recall 100,000 people last year being killed or wounded by speech.

>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>Think losing your freedom of speech won't kill thousands?? Move to China, Iran, Syria, etc. and try speaking freely. That's EXACTLY why it's a constitutional right.
>>>>>>
>>>>>>Are you kidding me?
>>>>>>Free speech in the USA is not killing/wounding 100,000 people per year. Guns are killing/wounding 100,000 people a year in the USA.
>>>>>>So ummm...which one seems to be ...oh geeze forget it.
>>>>>
>>>>>I quick Google search and I found 3 or 4 links to the same statics that say homicide/gun violence is 15th or so among leading causes of death in the US: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/15-most-common-causes-of-death-in-the-united-states.htm
>>>>>
>>>>>So why are people so fanatical about banning guns? Because these deaths are far more sensational than all the others. Smoking kills WAY more people than guns do, Are you on the anti-smoking soapbox when someone dies of cancer or heart disease from smoking?
>>>>>Should they pass more laws restricting smoking? Maybe more enforcement here is the issue.
>>>>
>>>>You're not going to attempt to convince us that there hasn't been any backlash in regards to smoking right? Perhaps some public awareness messages? Or maybe some laws banning smoking indoors? Or perhaps the number of people that smoke hasn't gone down? All you're doing is proving me right hahahaha
>>>
>>>No, what I'm saying is that there are countless laws banning all manner of things - and people do it any way. Same will happen if you outlaw guns. People will continue to kill people.
>>
>>Riiiight. But the laws and public awareness sure help a lot. You're attitude seems to be that even if you have a methodology that's proven to work (thus saving countless lives) it's not worth it because it's not 100% effective. I think we're at the point now where the issue simply has to be addressed with actions - and this seems to be a model that has had outstanding success.

>But the laws and public awareness sure help a lot

>Are you serious? Did any of the existing gun laws stop the guy in CT from killing people? Do you REALLY think passing more laws will stop the next guy?
>
>Again, I'm all for public awareness and education. I'd even go so far to say that if you want to buy a gun, you should be required to get certified training on it. Not unlike getting a drivers license.
>
>But passing more "hey we passed a new law so now we're all safe from mass murderers" laws is just plain stupid. These laws didn't stop anyone up till now, and they won't stop anyone in the future. Again, ask yourself this... if a criminal wants to rob a store at gun point, is he going to pay attention to the law that says "You can only have a 7 round magazine instead of a 10 round magazine"??
>Is he? Don't tell me that that's a tired old line. It's a very good question.

If there was no gun for him to get or no magazine for him to put in the gun, then yeah it's gonna stop him. If there are laws that make it harder for him to get a gun then it will work. If it wasn't so easy for him and all his buddies to get guns growing up then perhaps the culture of rob-kill-shoot wouldn't be so prevalent. Perhaps with some stricter laws and awareness over the next 3 decades we can make a difference. Model has worked before.

>I'v been saying all along - let's solve the problems with intelligence, not knee jerk reactions. You're right - public awareness & education are the key. More law are a waste of paper and ink.

Intelligence..hell common sense...less guns = less shooting. Soooo lets see here..what's the best way to have less guns and less guns in hands of criminals...hmmm. Oh I know! How about some laws! Or perhaps you're ok with every wackoo who wants too walking into a gun show and buyin whatever they want with no background checks?
