>For those that are not so gun savvy - This is NOT an assault rifle. Let me say it again. It is NOT an assault rifle. Why not? Because it is a single shot weapon. One shot per trigger pull. Just like a pistol. The shooter at Virginia Tech uses two SINGLE SHOT pistols with 10 round magazines to kill 32 people. Functionally there is NO DIFFERENCE between the AR 15 Bushmaster and the 22 pistol used in VA. That is why this rifle is freely available in the US - it's not covered under the assault weapons bad because it's not an assault rifle.
>
>Assault rifles are rifles like the AK-47 which are Fully Automatic, meaning that as long as you hold the trigger the weapon keeps firing, or the US made M16A2, which is Semi-Automatic, meaning each trigger pull fires 3 rounds. These are military weapons that cannot be purchased in the US.
>
>For your reference, check wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban which states "The term, assault weapon, when used in the context of assault weapon laws refers primarily (but not exclusively) to semi-automatic firearms that possess the cosmetic features of an assault rifle that is fully automatic."
>
>Now, the Bushmaster may look similar to the M16, but it is NOT an M16. Because they look similar, people are scared. Hence the term "Scary weapons ban". This is just plain ignorance on the part of people who just don't know better.
>
>So what's the point? You can kill 32 people with a 22 caliber pistol.
>What will this part solve? Nothing!
>
>3 - limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds
>Absolutely pointless. This will solve NOTHING. The shooter at Virginia Tech used two pistols, both with 10 round magazines and killed 32 people - so he stopped to reload. Even with a 5 round magazine it only takes a fraction of a second to reload. The capacity of the magazine means NOTHING.
>What will this part solve? Nothing!
>
>4 - strengthening penalties for gun trafficking
>I'm not sure how this is relevant as gun trafficking played no part in these shootings. I agree that gun trafficking should be dealt with severly.
>What will this part solve? Nothing!
>
>See the point? This legislation already exists. background check are already in place. The assault weapons ban is already in place (true assault weapons, not weapons that 'look scary', Limiting magazines to 10 round? Silly. Trafficing? Already illegal.
>
>See also this article: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01/16/16544310-why-gun-groups-say-no-way-to-assault-weapons-ban?lite. The first 3 paragraphs (emphasis mine):
>
>With assault weapons firmly in the crosshairs of state and federal lawmakers, gun-rights groups say they are not willing to give an inch when it comes to restricting access to the weapon of choice in recent mass shootings. (Not true)
>
>From arguments over what exactly defines an assault weapon to enthusiasts who say the guns are just plain fun to shoot, defenders of assault weapons say the White House and others are misguided in their focus on banning them.
>
>“I can’t possibly imagine what logic people are following that somehow another law, just one more law, will solve these issues,” said Keith Morgan, president of the West Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun group.
>
>People are killed in greater number by cars, bats, hammers, hands, and feet,” he added. “Examining the tool and attempting to ban the tool will have absolutely no effect. We’re dealing with a people problem. We’ve got to find a people solution.”
>

>
>and
>
> California is also one of three states that employ a “one-feature” test to identify assault weapons, banning all weapons that have one military-style feature, such as a pistol grip or telescoping stock.
>I'v never understood how/why a pistol grip or folding stock has any bearing at all, other than "it looks scary".
>
>
>So, go ahead, pass more feel good laws that don't stop current criminals but make citizens into criminals overnight.
>
>Hey, it's good politics though.
