Not quite sure it applies to what I do. Last seven jobs I held, the philosophy was "ours the code, yours the data, everyone take care of their stuff".

It could, but success of the argument is uncertain. It's like with independent press - it may be called so because it's independent from a government, but it still isn't independent on the whims of advertisers, owners and their merry friends. So cloud may be safer against mechanical failure, physical theft of hardware and a few such event, but probably less safer from the whims of the holder. All your data are belong to us, eh?
