The army had cannons not just muskets - and having a gun in your house doesn't make you safer - there was a report on that not too long ago and the odds of the gun saving you from a problem are substantially less than a problem happening as a result of the gun being in your house to begin with (i.e. - accidents etc).
Not only that, but living in a place where more people have guns appears to make you more likely to be killed by a gun (contrary to the idea that more guns mean more protection):
