I don't understand how or why you could believe this to be true.

The purpose of the amendment was to explicitly state that the mass citizenry (the militia) needs to be armed to prevent the intrusions upon that which had been so imposing upon the colonist's lives that they deemed it necessary to separate from their parent nation, and fight a war to maintain that separation. When added, they had just fought against tyranny and oppression, and they desired to prepare and equip the people so that it could never again take hold upon men as it did to the early colonists.

But even beyond that, the fundamental principles of most of the ideals found in all of the enumerated Bill of Rights lend or extend themselves directly out of much older philosophies, doctrines and documents, such as the Magna Carta (of the 1200s), and out of earlier colonial writings and essays written surrounding a crisis averted, or a remedy discovered. And they are based upon the principles of personally owned property (beginning first and foremost with our person, and the things related directly thereof).

There is also an entire body of writing related to these principles which existed at the time and, when read today, do not lose any of their significance, but rather sound out as that voice many have longed to hear even today:

The Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms - "A reverence for our great Creator, principles of humanity, and the dictates of common sense must convince all those who reflect upon the subject, that government was instituted to promote the welfare of mankind and ought to be administered for the attainment of that end." Their thinking was this: as colonists, justified in taking up arms to defend their liberty against any attempt to "enslave" them.

Our own Declaration of Independence - "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." Their thinking was a pledge of everything they earthly possess to defend the same, to keep themselves free from any who would attempt to "enslave" them.

A famous letter written by Thomas Jefferson called "The Tree of Liberty Letter": "What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure."

These are not writings of a mindset existing at some time period which has since departed over time. These same men are alive today, with the same designs on all of mankind as were at work back then: enslavement.

From the Anti-Federalist Papers: "The evils we experience flow from the excess of democracy. The people do not want virtue, but are [made] the dupes of pretended patriots."

The nature of men seeking domination over other men, their believed power to control lives, this has not changed at its core. The outward mechanisms are different, the tools of their trade have been honed, but they are today as they were in the beginning.

These are the reasons the U.S. founding fathers enumerated the 2nd amendment, and pointed so strongly at its intended purpose and meaning. There are absolutely no doubts as to what they were intending.

It is very, very clear what their purposes were: preservation and if necessary, a restoration. And it is completely clear that all of mankind faces these very threats from ruthless power-seeking bodies every single day.
