Men of conscience recognize that there is an intent behind the country, its purpose, its "philosophy," its direction, the "higher law" of its character.

If suddenly there was a law that said "You must kill every child you have below four years of age," would you follow that law? Of course not. At that point you would recognize that the law being purported violates very clearly the intent, the purpose, the philosophy and direction of the country.

That is what these men of conscience do when they see laws, such as gun control laws, which go against the original intent, the purpose, the philosophy, the direction of the country, and in this case specifically, it's founding father's convictions as conveyed through writings.
