>I just made a small, sample .EXE to see if the setup wizard is any better than with 5.0...Well, it looks about the same and the install disks that were created seemed to work ok until I noticed that there was no icon created on the desktop AND there was no entry created in [Start] -> [Programs]!!

It doesn't create an icon on the desktop. You have to set the option to create an entry in the Start Menu. You should also download setup wizard update from the VFP web site. Even though it looks about the same, there are some major differences. The VFP setup wizard creates true CAB files, will create a single EXE "web" installation and does a MUCH better job of including ActiveX controls.
