George,

>I'm sure Lianja is a decent product. However, my opinion is this is sort of a sleight of hand to get developers to think they need something like Lianja when all the tools are out there already to accomplish everything for free and for about the same investment in time and resources. In other words, getting developers to plop down a chunk of change and investment in one of their many sub products to think they're really getting something they wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. By the time they figure out they didn't need it - it's too late, you're locked in!

I don't believe in free tools anymore. Too many times the free solutions were buggy, with no support and got outdated soon. That is fine if you are a willing to cope with that or have a really tight budget, but as our company grew bigger, with more developers, we are well willing to pay for decent, well working, well documented and supported paid alternatives. They tend to end up as cheaper solutions than the free ones, which take more time to integrate and dealing with the headaches.

Its like buying the parts of your computer yourself, assembly it, and discover all kind of problems because of (hidden) incompatibilities, suffer from instability problems and a short lifetime of your desktop computer. I did that in the past, but gave up about 15 years ago. I'd rather spend a little more money for something off the shelve which you connect and just turn on.

IMO, Life is too short to deal with trivial stuff

Walter,

>Other notes:
>Are you going to have a mishmash of languages or stay with the FoxPro variation?
>Doesn't hiring Lianja proficient programmers seem unlikely - there would be a training cost for new developers.
>Where are the online demos? - I've yet to see anything online - web or mobile- where people can test it out, look at the performance, design etc.
>(it's almost unheard of NOT to have online demos or examples nowadays)

>So these are some of the red flags I see off the top of my head.

>>Hi All,
>>
>>We are running a software company and have a complex database app in the medical field. Since VFP has been discontinued we are searching for another development tool that can move us to the next level. By that I mean:
>>
>>- A more modern user interface
>>- Running cross platform or at least some tablets natively
>>- A solution to upgrade our application to run in a browser.
>>
>>This of course without having to rewrite all our code or entirely redesigning (we are using a lot of VFP scripts stored in the database, out there on many clients) the application.
>>
>>We have found that at least from a functionality POV Lianja seems to fit us best. Granted, it has not been released yet, but so far the comments I've read are positive. The company behind it seems to be a solid company (as opposed to the ones we have seen in the past) and their functionality is certainly looking impressive.
>>
>>Since it is supporting VFP compatibility to a high degree, it seems very interesting as much code could be ported over without much problems (I'd assume) and we do not have to entirely retrain all programmers into a new programming language. The support for other language like Python, PHP and Javascript as a real bonus I think.
>>
>>If this works, we are willing to invest in this product. the pricing seems reasonable to me.
>>
>>My question is what your opinion is about Lianja. Are there any caveats we should know about. Are there any valid reasons not to go this way ?
>>
>>Thanks,
>>
