>>As late as 1993, the kids in some high schools around here, were, as part of the "knowing computers" curriculum, learning Cobol.

Smart move: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9227263/The_Cobol_Brain_Drain?taxonomyId=154

According to last year's Computerworld survey, 64% of respondents said their organization still used Cobol- more than any prevalent languages except Java and VB6. In 2013 the smartest career choice may well be Cobol with its very highly paid and stable careers with none of the risks and uncertainties of the rest of the bleeding edge market.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
