Is there any access control or antipiracy in place?
For example, some access control schemes maintain a list of workstations running a program and allow only X to run it simultaneously. If workstations crash out the count may not get decremented properly so the scheme may falsely think there are no available instances.
Some antipiracy schemes use hardware "dongles". If a dongle is not present or not properly connected that could cause a protected program to not run.
