One of the reasons I love baseball is spring training coincides with the season of spring (duh!), the time of rejuvenation and hope. As ordinary human beings it's healthy. Every team is tied for first place. The rookies are all going to make good, the guys who had career years last year are going to be even better, the trades and free agent signings are all going to go down as brilliance by the GM.

You probably noted that two of the giants of baseball, Stan Musial and Earl Weaver, both died on January 19. Maybe not quite Thomas Jefferson and John Adams but something worth noting in our baseball-addled corner of the world. Stan the Man was 92 and Earl was 82. The NY Times reliably came through with life-affirming obits of both of them. There was a great photo of Earl bantaming it up with an umpire, the act for which he was most famous. His cap had popped off his head, even though he wore it backwards at such times to avoid the infraction of touching an umpire. He was a determined but not great player who discovered he was great at something else.
