>The US embassy invasion in Tehran, 1979. Interesting that those who are in your camp always start the west vs. Iran historical context at this point in time and omit the west's involvement (the UK and US) in the overthrow of a democratically elected prime minister (Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh) and his government in 1953 (26 years prior to the embassy invasion) in order to have continued access to Iranian oil (at enormous cost to those who dared oppose the west-supported ruthless puppet regime of the Shah). We only remember the history that works for our point of view.

When you're right you're right. Americans would not score very well on a national history test. Not even our own, and it would be much worse if the test was about other places in the world.

Here is a plug for Coursera, which I became aware of from a post here. (Al Doman? I'm not sure). I am taking an online class on world history since 1750. It is very enjoyable and I am learning a disconcerting number of things I didn't know before. About 40 million people around the world are taking this class, which I think is also cool.

My younger daughter, who is up to her eyeballs in classes required for graduation, asked me why I would take a class I don't have to take. I said it's a knowledge for knowledge's sake thing. She just shook her head and smiled. Of course, no one is as smart as a 20 year old ;-) Sometimes I tell her you've still got your dumb years ahead of you.
