Using a grid for data entry is notoriously tricky. I agree with you that jumping in and out of the grid to any kind of popup will be slow - I call this "The Hokey Pokey". The song refers to back and forth movements. I also like the fact that "hokey" is part of the name.

To warn the users without stopping them, you might change the color of any cells that have problems.
