This statement is in direct contrast to my personal experience with MVPs.

Correct. Microsoft wants the flash and flare to exist on Metro apps, their new app model which monitors and controls what people have installed, rather than on Win32 desktop apps which are a more or less free software ecosystem.

We're seeing Microsoft push people into controlled pastures. Politely, but being pushed nonetheless.
