Choice is good. It lets people decide what is best, and they can push in a particular direction. Monopoly power (as Microsoft wields) is bad because it forces personal and/or political agendas upon people.
BTW, for those who haven't tried Linux before ... you can download CD-sized ISO images which you can burn, boot and try out without installing onto your hard drive. You'll be amazed. Web (email, Firefox), sound, video, 3D, many software libraries, programming (wx, Qt, Mono as a .NET alternative), and some of the base graphical user interfaces put Windows' Aero Glass to shame (Unity on Ubuntu, for example, and Gnome 3 many people like).
Windows isn't the only OS out there. Try Ubuntu. Try Linux Mint. Try Red Hat.
