I don't use Win8, so I can't comment. But I want you to know that on my screen I have no icons, zero. I use SlickRun, which gives me quick access to my not so frequently used program. My most used programs are given fixed positions on the Taskbar, from left I have Opera, Otlook, IE and VFP9. To start and maximize/minimize Opera, I use Win+1. For Outlook it's Win-2, Win-3 for IE, VFP is Win-4, and so on.
