Help with version control of table structures and content
We are developing a system with quite extensive and changing configuration data.
The config is stored in a group of about 6 tables & a database. Those tables will probably contain between say 10 and several hundred records each when we go live.
One of our requirements is to maintain some sort of version control on those tables for both the structure (rarely changing) and the data content (changing frequently).
From the version control we want to be able to step back to a previous version of the config and/or to be able to compare selected versions.
We are using VFP5.0 & VSS6.0
The current plan is store all the dbf's & the dbc in VSS (as binaries I guess) and to code a few utilities that will dump the structure and content of the .dbc & all its dbfs to a series of text files for the comparisons.
Does anybody have any tips/advice on ways of doing this, or existing tools that might be useful?
eg: would it be possible/feasible to 'install' a text generator into VSS for .dbc's & .dbf's so it will generate text equivalents on check-in as it does for forms etc??
Any/All suggestions appreciated.
TIA
Craig
