One of the many striking about the Beatles was how simple their early hits were. Yeah yeah yeah. And I love her. I saw her standing there. I want to hold your hand. Simple but eternal yearnings.

When they moved on to more complex songs, their fans followed them. I was only 10 years old when Sgt. Pepper came out so was too young to appreciate it. It went off like a bomb in the rock universe. FM radio stations played it continuously around the clock. Listeners parsed it for every hint of meaning. I think the famous cover of "Abbey Road", their last recording, was in response to all the wild rumors, a photo to feed the rumor machine. Paul is dead, all that. They had planted some seeds with the Sgt. Pepper cover and went to town with the Abbey Road cover. My suspicion is it was dreamed up by John after a pint late one evening.

(Paul barefoot. 28 if on the license plate. You bet they planned it).

Just to keep us off balance, he wrote achingly beautiful songs like "Julia", which was written for his mother.
