Sadly that is the case. As you say below it's a necessary way of controlling the followers...especially in times like we have now with a much better understanding of the world and universe we live in. The ploy works like this - they tell you all these crazy wild stories (talking snakes, magic apples, walking on water, knocked up virgins, dead people waking around..etc etc etc) - then if you dig toooooo deep ..one of the common responses is "well...yeah it MIGHT be wrong...it MIGHT be crazy...but what's the harm of following this anyway? Do you want to gamble all eternity in hell? Wouldn't it be worth it to follow with us juuust on the off chance we're right?" If you start to fall for it at this point (which many people do)...they now know that if they work on you long enough they can have you completely brainwashed over a matter of time.
It would seem logical to take the good parts of the religion - like the famous "golden rule" or some of the ten commandments ("dont kill each other") and apply those things to your own moral structure. I agree with some the of the philosophies in this religion on how to live your life ...along with some lifestyle philosophies of other religions too - but duh that's where the buck stops with me. Now a Christian is going to be taught to stay away from people like me because I don't fall for the rest of the bogus crap and therefor I'm evil. Meanwhile I go on living and won't avoid someone just because I disagree with their religious affiliation. So now I ask you - who is the better person? I don't think it's the discriminating prejudice bible-tumpers.
