Yes, you can have instances of 2008 and 2008 R2 on the same box, express or developer.

>First, thank you. Do you know if 2008R2 Express can be installed in addition to the already installed 2008 Express? So that I don't have to patch the existing database but only to add a new one?

>>If DB from 2008R2 don't use any feature from enterprise edition, you can install 2008 R2 express edition and restore DB.

>>>Hi,
>>>
>>>I need to "copy" customer database to my SQL server 2008 database. My SQL server is 2008 (10.00.5500) and the customer's is SQL 2008 R2 (10.50.1600). Of course when I try to restore their .bak file I get message that it can't be done.
>>>I am concerned that upgrading my SQL server to R2 may not be practical. Can anyone suggest an alternative way of accomplishing that task? TIA

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
