When I check, SQL has the updated version number, and if I try to install the SP3 again, it says there are no applicable engines to update. So it seems that the update went part way through, errored out, left no indication of why, and then locked me in so that I cant try again, other than to completely uninstall and re-install.

Yes, SQL runs and I shows version 10.0.5500.0, which indicates SP3. It may be true, however, that the version indicator was set before the installation was complete. So now I cant verify complete successful installation, and I cant back-out unless I completely uninstall. I need to solve this before I try updating the production servers.
