>>I sent last Sunday's Dilbert to my daughter, who is an engineering major, titling the email "A Vision of the Future?".

>>Her response was "hahaha ha." It's always nice having an offspring smarter than oneself, which this one definitely is. At least she has inherited my quirky sense of humor. She has a huge heart, too. She is making plans to go to Tanzania next summer as part of a relief mission under the auspices of Engineers Without Borders. Her mom is fearful for her safety and doesn't want her to go. I am not impervious to that -- my bad dreams for years and years now have involved Emily or her sister dying horribly -- but she has earned the right to guide her own life. A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.

Pretty good. She sure plants plenty of zingers in me.

She and her sister have been fortunate enough to grow up in an era when gender bias has largely eroded. It's not all the way there yet; there are still pay disparities, for example. But compared to the way things used to be, it's a good time to be a girl. Med schools, law schools, and post-graduate programs in general now have female majorities. Anything boys can do, girls can do, too. Better, Emily would add ;-)
