Depends on what you consider 'normal' size.
At my day job we have dozens of applications that have databases way above that. All are on SQL Server.
When I was doing FP and VFP development I had applications where I had to split databases as far back as the early '90s. The resulting complexity and speed penalties made the jump to SQL databases mandatory as soon as it was practical.
