>>One of the things I liked about the Abraham Lincoln depicted in the movie "Lincoln" (a movie which in some ways I did not like at all) was that he listened to and tried to learn from people he did not agree with on basic terms.

It was not the liveliest of movies. It was intentionally low key with light and volume. Spielberg and his cinematographer said in interviews that it was intentionally shot with light that was true to the times. Electricity had not yet been invented so the only light was from the sun or weak light from candles. The climactic voting scene was shot with natural light coming in through huge windows.

I don't know whether the Lincoln depicted in the movie is accurate. Like all icons, he is surely misunderstood. Spielberg's Lincoln is not the one I grew up with. Lincoln the comic cutup? I don't know. It does leave me wanting to understand more.

It was nice watching it on DVD with Allie. She is figuring out what she wants to do in life, not unlike many young adults. She didn't like the movie even as much as I did but she observed it with a sharp eye. She immediately got some things I didn't. It was a set piece of right brain and left brain intelligence.

We both hated the Mary Todd Lincoln character played by Sally Field. I'm sure we were intended to. We laughed at a private line, "Best Actress in an Annoying Role."
