Either that or simply turn off the "Enable last 10 messages panel" checkbox under the Settings heading.

I was initially completely puzzled by Craig's annoyance -- as I wasn't seeing the information he was referring to. It wasn't until I'd revisited the settings screen did I remember that the "last 10 messages panel" was one of the things I'd turned off ages ago -- mainly because "made the screen cluttered" and also made the message area too narrow whenever I had the monitor in portrait mode.
