How is/was Tommy able to use the INDEX ON DTOC(x) FOR... expression (x being datetime) to initially create the index if MS disallows potentially variable length keys? It only failed for Tommy on the update, yet I would think it should fail at all points if such a feature were enabled as a rule.

I must not be understanding something.
In testing, INDEX ON DTOC(x) works correctly in VFP9. Adding new records, changing dates, all works correctly on a datetime field. Only when I change SET CENTURY to the other value does it fail and give that error.
I only have VFP9SP2 to test with. Was the variable length key constraint relaxed in SP2? Is there another date setting which triggers it?
What am I missing?
