JavaScript is the area where I saw the most free and open debates / exchanges among top developers; nothing to do with some tech 'evangelists' saying the absolute, revealed truth.
It's also an area where progress has been incredibly fast since 2005 (birth of AJAX, google maps, etc.).
This has much to do with the development of facebook, twitter, google apps, document cloud, etc.; just take a look at a facebook page source HTML (Ctrl+U) - it's no longer HTML, filled up with JavaScript ...
