FWIW, as backfill, I used to use "cancelled" as the only spelling having grown up being taught the same. In the late 90s, early 2000s, when I worked as a contractor on an accounting system for the federal government, KPMG was hired for various tasks. Thy came in and their preference was "canceled." So, we all became adopters of this, their "proper" spelling. I have (more or less) used "canceled" ever since. I am willing to go back, however. It's not a deal breaker. :-)
