Silverware was easier to use and had considerably more functionality than MSCOMM. Among other things it supported various error correcting file transfer protocols.
I used it extensively when using VFP to communicate with serial devices (not just modems).
I used COMMX by Greenleaf later on, but I think Greenleaf is gone.
