Chopsticks work quite fine for me. What *does* make a big difference is how you hold them. For example "nejiri-bashi" (holding them so they cross - term literally means "twisted chopsticks") ends up reducing the amount of leverage -- thus significantly reducing the amount of force you can impart on closing (for grasping, or cutting) and opening (to separate), as well as some loss of control (they tend to want to twist around, so you end up dropping stuff frequently) -- actually saw a website once where someone actually took measurements of the amount of force that one could impart on chopsticks depending on the various ways people might hold them. Also there are differences in type of cuisine too -- foods where chopsticks are used are better suited for chopsticks than "Western" cuisine.

One utensil that has always baffled me -- the spork. Once saw a spork that left me with a "What the heck was the designer thinking?!?" thought -- the fork tines had barbs (perhaps in attempt to make it so it could hold food better), and a serrated edge on the spoon bowl (perhaps to give it a knife aspect).
