>>As an implant hopefully will last the rest of your life, selecting more expensive ones I could understand, if there was a difference measured long term: remember the french breast implant scandal for an example to avoid.

A cemented Exeter hip may well last the rest of your life, or certainly well into the 20-year range. The smarty-pants cool newer ones may only last a decade or 15 years, or less if it's one of the flops of which there are more than a few. The trouble is that it's not easy to test these things for 20 years before you start using them ;-) and if people got a dud, usually the manufacturer stumps up compensation/redo. Perhaps if MS (and the evangelists) had to compensate people who obediently jumped aboard a bandwagon and then got Foxed in less than (say) ten years, there'd be less churn and more care.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
