>Netflix dropping Silverlight, thought it is intersting they making the move now. I just don't understand how MSFT could spend so much money and development on something, then drop it so quickly which causes other companies to drop it. How long did it last before they announced they were droping it.... perhaps 2 years? This link is not from a tech article, but from an "so so" investing site.

I have been working with PC’s since 1975 (S-100), including CPM/MPM based, IBM, Apple, and Microsoft Operating Systems. Ashton Tate was an interesting company that tried to control one area of the computer arena. I have many stories about those folks from day one. We saw them start out as a small company, and then had a vision as to what direction the world should turn.

All the software and hardware companies have or had some sort of vision. Microsoft has or had the largest sales staff and ability to convince large customers what direction to take. It might not be good for the customers but it helped and still helps Microsoft. They know how to make money.

How many failed technology paths have we been given? As developers we have had to support whatever the gods tell us. Then the heavens open up and alas there is a void. It is not good for the developer or the customer. We have to earn a living, support our customers, and maintain a good reputation, while our customers have to remain in business.

Why could we not have standards that computer software and hardware companies agree upon? It would help the industry and its customers. I realize the importance of innovation. It can allow one company to be a leader. When you throw out that latest offering with insufficient thought as to where its path will lead, you are not doing a service to the industry.

We have to be careful because as we get older we may not realize the impact technology has on the majority of users, and how to exploit it. Many are telling us to dump desktop computers. Use the tip of your finger to do all things. Watch a full-length movie on a screen barely big enough for an aspirin box. Text while driving or walking down the street. Don’t read books – use a flat screen.

What is the answer? There may not be an answer. Just try your best to keep up with what is going on in the technology world. One thing for sure whatever you are comfortable with today may be gone tomorrow. So be sure to explore, read and try new things. That is how I was able to support my family and put our son and daughter through college. Do not get comfortable, but enjoy the ride! And while you are at it, try to help others along the way. Oh yes, and play a musical instrument to help make the world a better place! :)
