I was raised in an Irish Catholic neighborhood in San Francisco, and my best friend is Jewish. We have been friends for over 60 years and talk to each other at least once a month. He lives in Connecticut, and I am in California. We lived a few doors from each other, and here is one of the jokes popular in 1952.
A Jewish boy named Paul and a Catholic boy named Johnny were good friends. One day Johnny asked Paul, “When you grow up do you think that you will be a Rabbi”? Paul answered, “Well perhaps”.
Paul asked Johnny, “When you grow up do you think that you will be a Priest”? Nearly every boy who attended Catholic School was told that he would be a Priest. Johnny answered, “It is possible”.
Paul then asked, “Do you think that you will be Pope”? Johnny answered, “Oh, I do not think that is possible”! Paul then asked, “Do you think that someday you will be Jesus”? Johnny did not know how to reply. Paul then stated, “Look, one of our boys made it”!
