Other times I'll get in but when I click on a message I'll get the same error displayed in the message portion of the screen. If I click on the message again or try to log in again most times it will work the second time.

Do you have the same issue with another browser? If not, could you remove all temporary files from the browser, close all instances and restart? If yes, can you try with another PC or one from a Terminal Server connection to see if you would have the same issue from an alternative route?

No, there isn't any relation with any upgrade as none have been done yet.
