I also shrinked the log putting it back to 1024 KB. This is the standard procedure that is normally done on a daily basis however because of a small glitch, it hasn't been done recently. This was not a factor.
I also rebuilt the entire full text index. This did not change anything.
This is a Windows Server 2003 with not as much memory as I would like to but something has triggered this decrease of performance since a few weeks and I cannot find what it is. I do not think for that load that the memory is a factor. It just started to act like that from one day to another. However, I agree that more memory, better CPUs and upgrade of OS, including SQL Server 2012, would and should help in pretty much everything.
