My daughters devoured the Unfortunate Events series. The guy had his finger on the pulse of what engaged young readers.

No one can ever surpass K.D. Rowling. Like so many other parents, I took my daughters to buy the new volumes on the release dates at midnight. It was an adventure. The back story was better than the Harry Potter stories. Single mom on the dole, writing the first volume in a cafeteria with her kid in the pram. Wow.
