>Of course, this application is not intended to work as is at 100% on small devices. This is why developers build mobile apps for that in order to offer a subset version of the application for mobile devices. And, for now, there is no plan for that as I just ended at 20-month stretch on this one and I really need some time before starting something big like that which would require a totally different application. And, for that, I would also, "hope", that all this work will help to attract more members, that actual members will appreciate the new site and talk about it to others, and also to have more subscriptions.

When I tried UT on tablets before, it was workable, but not really pleasant. As I consider the UT interface well above other forum groups if read via normal PC/Laptop (at least 1366/768 screen plus keyboard and mouse), not really surprizing as you say yourself. As an aside: while I usually tout the need to develop with mobile in mind, when accessing UT via pad I most of the times only read, as typing without clamshell keyboard is not as automatic for me. Maybe UT in general benefits if geared to be accessed on devices making longer answers than twitter utterings easy ;-)

That said, I thought about how I use with tabs (mostly 7' android via Dolphin browser, very seldom via old iPad1), I found my usage pattern diverted from desktop usage a lot, and tried to analyze that from a develpoer POV. First of all it might be beneficial to prepare different personal settings/preferrences not once for each user, but give the user the opportunity to define device profiles they can select and feel comfortable with. Might also be useful in PC surroundings, if you easily switch the default you find most pleasant with the screen you are currently sitting in front of. I do believe that the people here have an affinity for more and/or different screens, more than one machine and other geek devices. The options to show the Forum-TV's opened or closed are the ones I *really* would set differently between tablet and PC: open on PC, closed on tablet.

As the tablet screen is too small to show the full interface and leads to extensive scrolling, one easy way is to "view all", much easier on the manual handling than my desktop usage, clicking in the TV, but on long thread more difficult to realize which sub-thread currently is meant when readin in view all-format. Therefore I usually have the forum messages TV in one tab open, open the message in a new tab and if it is interesting I follow the thread in the new tab via the "next" button on bottom. If there is no "next" message, this button disappears - nice and logical. Even nicer would be for the button to change caption from "next" to "down" when no message exists which would be located to the right in the treeview currently shown in full setting. This probably runs into the same problem as "new" without the full context, but the idea of following the messages as shown on current TV (thus missing previously read posts) of a thread would be nice, if (big if, I know!) you have a representation of the TV per user on your backend.

For the "view all" perhaps buttons to answer *each* of the posts directly might make sense in tablets - no need to switch navigation, if a button was to the right of each Thread ID, Message ID and Viewed in "view all".

Pls do not take my ideas as a slight of the new interface (which really is better both in desktop and tablet), but as my take on hopefully minimal effort to even better experience for the really different usage patterns I observed in me (which is a lousy count for test group, but what else have I got...).

regards
thomas
