There is nothing truly funny about war but a PBS Documentary I saw about WWII comes close. It is called “The Ghost Army” and is about the American 23 Headquarters Special Troops. It was comprised of 1100 men, 350 of who were artists from New York City and Philadelphia art schools. The group also included writers, sound engineers, theater technicians and radio operators.

Their mission was to deceive the German Army and they did a good job. One of their “weapons” was a 90 pound inflatable rubber M4 tank. They enter combat two weeks after D Day, and their lives were on the line many times. In all the documentary stated that two men were killed and 15 injured. Considering what they accomplished and how, it is truly a remarkable story. Many lives were saved due to the actions of the 23rd.

A number of well known artists and architects came out of that group. One was Bill Blass, a well known fashion designer.

If you enjoy stories about WWII that are not all about blood and guts and have a good bit of humor then you should enjoy this offering.
