Q2) ISTR reading one or more SF books that used "hir", I've never seen any that used "hem".

Somewhat OT - maybe things are different today, but 25 years ago it was extremely difficult to set up a small incorporated business in Sweden. At the time the company I was working for bought a piece of Swedish high-tech equipment for our production line. Both of the very small company's founders, young guys in their late 20s came over to install it.

In chatting with them they told some stories about getting incorporated. They knew before going in that the taxation and ongoing regulatory burden would be brutal. But they didn't know about the de facto incorporation process.

The authorities investigated every legal and financial aspect of their lives as if they were international criminals. When they could finally talk to someone in a position to tell them why, they were told that, precisely because of the disadvantages of incorporation, pretty much only crooks ever went through with it. So, it was "guilty until proven innocent" for new applicants.
