I agree with the strong sentences against driving while impaired. You can not only kill yourself that way, you can kill innocents. I learned this lesson very young and am lucky it didn't turn out worse than it did. At the age of 23 I was working in Colton, CA. One weekend a coworker let me use his car in return for dropping him off and picking him up at the airport in Ontario. On the Friday evening a bunch of us from work went to a Mexican restaurant in Riverside. Many of us were overserved with margaritas, definitely including me. The last thing I remember clearly was getting onto what was then California highway 91 north. I have vague memories of weaving in and out of traffic, trying to pass every car on the road, like it was a video game, and then no memories until I was standing behind Matt's car with two CHPs, bleeding badly from the head. They said they had me at 90 MPH on radar. They were good cop, bad cop, and I don't think it was an act. Bad cop said you stupid m**********r. You could have killed any number of people here. Due to my head injury I was taken to the hospital instead of to jail.

At least I learned my lesson. That was the last time I drove impaired, over three decades ago. When I look in the mirror I see the scar at the top of my forehead. I have not beaten the disease but at least I don't do that.
