Karen - if you're not using VFP's SQL commands, you are seriously limiting your ability. Getting started with SQL isn't hard. I have a number of articles/papers on my website about it. Unfortunately, all of them assume you at least know how to write a simple query to pull data from a single table. If you do, then try this paper:

http://www.tomorrowssolutionsllc.com/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=/Conference%20Sessions/Making%20the%20Most%20of%20SQL-SELECT.pdf&action=default

If not, you may want to get my e-book, http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/tamingvfpsql.htm. It walks you through VFP's SQL language step by step.
