Yes, it will matter. VFP is not designed for long-distance data access. What you're talking about is a WAN environment.
There are ways to mitigate the issues. Use Terminal Server located at the same place as the data and use that. Or, use a web app. But remote data to a desktop VFP app is asking for trouble.

And they want to be sure that the physical distance will not be a problem.
