Don't think they have that option - the prevailing winds in one hemisphere always blow in the same general direction....
But they sound as if they will be operating close to the troposphere boundary which means they will have cooler air below and warmer air above.

Don't know how they'd power the compressors.
I'd guess hydrogen filled - cheaper and, given the environment, not likely to be ignited. Maybe they'll have a robot throwing sand bags over the side. :-}

A friend of mine was an airship (helium filled) pilot for a while. Went up in that a couple of times - very different from hot air ballooning....
His father had flown hydrogen airships back in the '40's...
