The fee-based requirement still shuts people out, and they are those who have just as much drive, desire and ability to learn as the rest of us, but are financially (for whatever reason, sick family members, poorer country economics, whatever) unable to obtain the fee-based content.
And in the age of unlimited, free, digital replication to all being possible by the technology, and at an event specifically designed to bring about the latest and greatest knowledge to all developers everywhere, then all content should be entirely free to obtain, copy and distribute. And there should be a donation system in place allowing anyone who wants to contribute back the ability to do so.
For example, I would be more than willing to donate $50 to the effort because I can afford $50. But even if there are those who couldn't donate even $1, being able to obtain copies of all the content is more important via giving than in shutting those people out because of money. In fact, what could be more evil?
The donation mechanism makes sense. It should allow for donations to be made to the organizers of the event separately, as well as to all of the individuals who contribute individually. But all of it should only be donation-based because to do anything else is to shut people out unnecessarily, those who have the drive, desire, and tools (computers, software) to learn and grow ... they would just be prohibited by money issues ... and in this day and age of unlimited online digital replication out to all being literally possible by the technology itself, to limit it to only those people who can pay ... it's nothing short of mental genocide.

And especially for those people who presently have no gold. Just the drive, desire, and innate ability to achieve as well as any of us, given the opportunity to do so.
I heard a quote a year or so back:
"How many of the Einsteins who ever lived had their work published? Hardly any. And how many of the Shakespheres who ever lived had their writings published. A couple."
How many Einsteins, Shakespheres, Mozarts, Turings, Knuths, etc., do you want to throw away today over issues of money when the technology to give them access to everything is already in place, costs nothing, and can help so much?
It's time to wake up. The digital world's innate nature is changing everything about knowledge exchange and communal growth.
