>Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I have a small file that have 3 memo fields, only 2 are used. Last month the ftp brok the 2Gb limit, I packed the file and it was reduced to 80Mb, i thought that perhaps it was a bit of a one off as the file has been used for 2-3 years recording lots of data. However this weekend I got the same error again, from 80mb to 2gb in about amonth. I had a backup and packed that, siz about 81 mb. I've checked and I can't see where I might be adding in lots of blanks etc. anyone any ideas where I might find the solution?

Mark, if you have a specific application where you really need to reuse those memo records (because they are not longer than the 64-byte allocated block) so as to not introduce bloat, I have a mechanism that bypasses this shortcoming in VFP, even in multi-user environments. It requires a simple DLL and using a function call (instead of the REPLACE command) to update the memo field content.
